Julie Fowlis: Naidheachd / News

Newsletter September 2017

Dear friends,

I hope this finds you well!  I am embracing the Autumn Equinox and feel like a new chapter is beginning on lots of fronts.   Here is the news as it stands today…

  1. 'alterum' - new album
  2. New Irish/Scottish Gaelic composition project
  3. US tour 2017

1) New album

Finally - the new album 'alterum' is here.  It will be released worldwide on October 27th, and will be available on both CD and vinyl.  The title comes from a Latin quote:

'alterum orbem terrarum eam appellant'
'they call it the other world'
Gaius Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Elder AD 23 – AD 79)

The album originally started life as an album exploring songs of the Gaelic 'otherworld' (mythology, mystery, supernatural) but which eventually evolved around the idea of 'other worlds'.  When I first started singing professionally, Mark Radcliffe (BBC Radio) said that my songs were like 'beautiful messages from another world'.  It struck me as unusual that songs which have been sung in a language which has been spoken for over a thousand years in Scotland, can sound so exotic, even foreign, here at home.  It got me thinking about the various worlds we inhabit, day to day, linguistically, culturally, socially, and how we move between them.  This album celebrates the Gaelic tradition I am so proud to be a part of, but also reaches out to other languages and traditions.  This album is a collection of songs, carefully chosen, and delivered in three languages - Gaelic, English and Galician.

Engineered by legendary musician Calum Malcolm and featuring special guests including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Donald Shaw, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh and Gillebride MacMillan, this has been the most enjoyable album I have recorded to date.

Pre-ordering is available directly from me at the website shop - and all CD pre-orders from will be shipped two weeks in advance of the worldwide release.  Vinyl orders are due for shipment upon arrival at end October, and a limited number will be available signed.  ALL orders made before Sept 30th will be signed by Julie.

You can hear a snippet of it here:

2) New Irish/Scottish Gaelic composition project

Earlier this year, my husband Éamon Doorley and I, along with two musical friends and collaborators were commissioned to write new music for Irish and Scottish Gaelic poetry, old and new.  We have been working with the incredibly talented Zoë Conway and John Mc Intyre on this project, and performed the material for the first time last week at Scotland's National Centre for Gaelic, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.  Our second performance will be in the National Concert Hall, Dublin on October 3rd, and here are links for tickets:

It's been hugely satisfying working within this new quartet and creating new music together.  Watch this space as there will be more to come I suspect…

3) US tour
It's that time of year again where we head off over the water to tour Stateside. This time with a new record!  So expect music from 'alterum' and music from the last ten years (and more...!). All dates and ticketing links are at:

And this year our touring schedule includes a stint in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colarado, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maryland and Ohio.  Come see us if you can!
